When should you register?
The advice every runner hears — register early or you'll miss out — is about the wrong risk. Across 629 Canadian races that publish a registration window, the median one stays open until the day before the race. You will rarely lose the spot. What you reliably lose by waiting is money: 361 entry prices step up in the next 30 days across 143 races. The real deadline is the price tier, not the entry cap.
You probably won't lose your spot
When registration actually closes, by share of races:
The final-week closes are mostly logistics, not scarcity — the organizer needs to print bibs and order medals, so online entry shuts a few days out even when the field is nowhere near full. Many of those races still take race-weekend entries in person.
You will pay more, though
Canadian races almost universally price in tiers — an early rate, a regular rate, and a late rate that can run 20–40% above the first one. Right now 361 of the 637 priced entry windows on this site end within 30 days — 57% of every published price on the calendar is gone within a month. Waiting until you're “sure about training” usually just means paying the next tier for the same bib.
Every race page here shows the current fee per distance and the window it applies to — and what a normal price looks like is in what races cost in Canada.
The exceptions do sell out
45 races on the calendar currently have at least one distance marked sold out, and another 58 are flagging limited spots. The pattern in that list is consistent: trail races with permit-capped fields, and special-format events — night runs, obstacle weekends, the big charity spectacles. Road 5Ks and 10Ks with open courses almost never appear on it. If your goal race is a capped trail event, the register-early advice is real; for most road races it is folklore.

How this was counted
Registration windows come from each race's own listing on its registration platform — 629 of the 1006 dated races on the calendar publish one. Price-tier end dates are read from the per-distance fee tables the same way. Everything recomputes nightly, so the “361 prices step up” figure is current, not a snapshot.
One honest caveat: races that don't publish a close date are usually the small, informal ones — the kind that take entries at a folding table on race morning. If anything, including them would push the “you won't lose your spot” finding further in the same direction.
