What does a race cost in Canada?

The middle 5K costs $50.81 and the middle marathon $120.64. Those come from 1,073 individual entry fees across 396 Canadian races, read off each organizer's own registration page and recomputed nightly. Nobody publishes this, so far as we can find — which is why it was worth counting.

The ladder is steeper than the distances are. A marathon is 8.4 times the distance of a 5K and about 2.4 times the price, which is roughly what you would expect once road closures, timing mats and six hours of marshals are spread over a much smaller field. The jump that surprises people is the one from 5K to 10K — the same morning, usually the same road, often $16 more.

It costs about the same everywhere

This is the flattest table on the page, and that is the finding. British Columbia is the dearest province to enter a short race in at $60.25 and Manitoba the cheapest at $50.40 — a spread of about $10 across the country. Whatever else varies between provincial racing scenes, the price of a bib is not really one of them.

Median 5K and 10K entry only, on purpose: a province whose calendar happens to skew long would otherwise look expensive for a reason that has nothing to do with what it charges. Provinces with fewer than 20 priced entries are left out entirely.

Trail races don't cost more

This one went against expectation. Comparing like with like — 5K, 10K and half marathon only — the median road entry is $59.43 and the median trail entry $61.59. Close enough to call it no difference. Trail racing has a reputation for being the cheaper, scrappier end of the sport, and at these distances the numbers simply don't support it. Where trail does get expensive is past the marathon, and that is an ultra premium rather than a trail one.

How this was counted

Every figure comes from an individual entry row on an organizer's own registration page — the price beside “Half Marathon”, not a price attached to the event as a whole. Fees are as the organizer publishes them, including the mandatory charges registration platforms add, because that is what actually leaves your account.

The mistake that makes this number wrong everywhere else. It is tempting to take a race's cheapest entry and file it under every distance the race offers. Do that and a marathon weekend with a 5K contributes its 5K price to the marathon column. We measured it both ways: the naive method puts the median Canadian marathon at $50, the honest one at $120.64. More than twice out, and confidently so.

Left out on purpose: relay and team entries (one price, several people), virtual entries, member, youth and student rates, and multi-distance combo tickets that can't be attributed to either distance. Bike tours, triathlons and open-water swims are excluded outright — they measure distance in kilometres too, and a 130 km charity ride was otherwise landing among the cheapest ultras in the country. Races whose next date isn't announced are excluded, because their prices are last year's.

Medians, not averages, throughout — one $400 stage race should not move the number for everyone else. “Middle half” is the 25th to 75th percentile: half of all entries at that distance fall inside it.
