Privacy

RaceFinder is run by Connor Laskowski, an individual in Ontario, Canada — not a company. Privacy questions, access requests and deletion requests all go to the same place: hello@racefinder.ca, and they reach a person, not a queue.

• Your email address, when you use one of the forms: the monthly newsletter, a race alert, the race-day checklist, quiz results, a race or club submission, a Run of the Month entry, or an account sign-in link.
• Whatever you type into those forms — a city if you give one, the race you asked to be alerted about, and for Run of the Month a first name, a short story and an optional link to a public activity. If you join the newsletter from a page about a particular province, we note which province.
• Reviews — a display name and your review text, stored on our server and shown publicly on the race page. Your email is stored with the review so it can be edited or removed, and is never displayed.
• Your saved races and race passport — kept in your browser by default. They reach our server only if you create an account, and are then stored against your email address so they sync between your devices.
• Anonymous counts of things like quiz completions and clicks through to a race's registration page. These are tallies, not profiles — no identifier is attached.

We never ask for or see payment details. Registration and payment happen on the organizer's own site.

Send you the thing you asked for, and — if you signed up for the newsletter — one email a month with new races, plus entry in the monthly draw. Your town and province, if we have them, are used for one thing: putting the races near you at the top of that email. Unsubscribing deletes both from the list; the short activity log below keeps its copy until it drops off on its own, and the signup notification in Connor's inbox stays until you ask us to delete it. We don't sell or rent your address, and we don't pass it to race organizers.

Asking for a race alert does not put you on the mailing list. Alerts, the checklist, quiz results and race submissions are one-off requests and are handled that way. Only the newsletter and giveaway forms add you to the list that receives the monthly email.

• Google AdSense. There are no ad units anywhere on this site and nothing here is a paid ad. But Google's AdSense script does load on every page — it was added so Google could verify ownership of the domain — and it can set its own cookies and receive your IP address and the page you're on. An earlier version of this page claimed the site had “no ad networks, no third-party tracking pixels”. That was wrong, and this paragraph replaces it. You can control what Google does with this at myadcenter.google.com.
• Amazon affiliate links. Some links on the gear pages go to Amazon and may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Clicking one lets Amazon set its own cookies. Those links are labelled where they appear.
• Vercel Analytics counts page views without cookies and without building a profile of you.
• Location. The “near me” features ask your browser for your position, sort races on your device, and stop there. Your coordinates are never sent to us or to anyone else.

The site sets one cookie of its own: rf_session, only after you sign in, so that you stay signed in. It lasts up to six months, and signing out or clearing your browser data removes it. Google's AdSense script, and Amazon if you click an affiliate link, may set their own — see above.

The services that run the plumbing. Each gets only what it needs, and none of them may use it for their own purposes:

• Vercel — hosting and page-view analytics.
• Upstash — the database holding subscriptions, accounts, reviews and pending alerts.
• Resend — sends the emails.
• Formspree — forwards form submissions to Connor's inbox.
• An AI provider writes the short summary on the race-quiz results page. It receives your quiz answers and the city you entered, and nothing else.
• CARTO serves the map tiles, so it sees your IP when a map loads.

These services run on servers that may be outside Canada, including in the United States, where local authorities can in principle compel access.

• Newsletter subscription — until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it.
• Account data (saved races, passport) and reviews — until you ask us to delete them.
• A pending race alert — until it fires, or until you unsubscribe.
• Run of the Month entries — deleted automatically about 100 days after the month they were entered for.
• A short activity log of recent signups, used to spot abuse. It holds the most recent 200 entries; older ones drop off on their own.
• Monthly draw records — when a draw is run, we keep the winner, the number of entries and the list of addresses that were in that draw, so we can show the draw was run fairly if anyone asks. Those records are deleted automatically after about 13 months, and asking us to delete your data removes you from them too.

Every marketing email carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and it keeps working long after the message was sent. Replying “unsubscribe” to any email works too. Unsubscribing also clears any race alerts you were waiting on.

Under Canadian privacy law you can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete it. Email hello@racefinder.ca and you'll get an answer from a person — deletion means the subscription, the account data, the passport, the reviews and the alerts, all of it.

If you're not satisfied with how a request was handled, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or, if you live in Quebec, to the Commission d'accès à l'information.

There are no passwords to leak — signing in is a one-time emailed link. Traffic is encrypted and admin access is behind a secret. That said, this is a small site run by one person, and nobody can honestly promise a system is unbreachable. If something went wrong that affected you, you would be told.

This site is meant for adults planning races. It isn't aimed at children and we don't knowingly collect their information. If a child has given us an email address, write to us and it will be deleted.
